According to a new study, laughing will not only brighten the face, but also nourish the mind because it increases the neurons in our brain. The more funny jokes, the more visible activity in the centers of certain neurons that create feelings of pleasure.
A team of scientists from the Medical Research Council to scan the brains of 12 volunteers to compare what happens when they heard of regular expressions and jokes. They found that the response of the central area of 'respect' in the brain light up more in response to humor rather than regular expressions. Furthermore, the strength of the response depends on how funny the responses received by each of 12 patients.
"We found a characteristic pattern of brain activity when the jokes used are word games," said Dr. Matt Davis of the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit in Cambridge, was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.
"The response was different in each person. Seen on brain mapping in processing a joke. The sentence shows how language contributes to the pleasure of getting a joke, "explained the researchers.
Furthermore, the researchers suggest that these findings can be used as a benchmark for understanding how people who can not communicate normally react to jokes. This research has been published in the June issue of the Journal of Neuroscience 2011.
